Cheerleading is an up and coming sport in the UK and Coventry Dynamite are determined to break the stereotype of shaking pom-poms and yelling chants, as we hope the attached promotional DVD demonstrates. We want UK cheerleading to parallel the huge sporting and commercial success that is seen in the states.

 

To do this we need the facilities, currently we train in a local junior school with inadequate flooring and no training equipment. We do manage to spend a few hours every other week in a gymnasium with a specialised sprung floor , which is brilliant but the we forever rely on the support of parents and part time jobs to fund this and, as you can imagine, the current economic climate has meant we have lost a number of young people.

 

Whilst we see other sports teams, particularly boy’s teams receiving regular sponsorship from local businesses and grants from sports charities, we rarely secure any funding. Not through lack of trying but it seems that there is this pre-conception that we stand around waving our pompoms, not doing very much at all. We have instead had to run sponsored events and bag pack at local supermarkets in order to help raise money.

 

With high profile sponsors such as Nike often investing in cheerleading companies in the USA we can see as the sport continues to grow as will the commercial interest. Year on year the competitions get bigger, better and attendance increases. As a squad we achieve more not only in competitions but also within our community– we regularly perform at charity functions and appear on local news and television, last year getting through to the final stages of Britain’s got Talent.
